Dotrice is the narrator of many George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. In this discussion between the two narrators, A Dance with Dragons narrator also discusses the complexity of how these books were recorded.

George R. R. Martin developed a fantasy series of novels called A Song of Ice and Fire that was originally planned to be a trilogy. After the success of the first three novels, Martin went on to write a fourth book in the series, A Feast for Crows, which was published by Bantam Books in May of 2005.

The long-awaited fans gobbled up this novel and Bantam Books decided to make the series into audiobooks. A Feast for Crows audiobook recording by Roy Dotrice was planned from beginning. However, Dotrice had a schedule conflict with the recording of A Feast for Crows.

This made Bantam Books turn to John Lee, even though the other books of the series had been recorded by Dotrice.

The publisher quickly discovered that this was a mistake. Many of the fans of this genre complained about the change in voices. Fans even started an online petition demanding the publisher make A Feast for Crows audiobook to be recorded by Roy Dotrice, instead of the one already released.

Dotrice is a British actor that is best known for his Broadway performances. The actor even received a Tony award for his acting in A Moon for the Misbegotten. Most North American fans know him from his appearance as the father in the Beauty and the Beast television series that ran in the 1980s.

The biggest reason the fans rebelled against the publisher for using a different person to record A Feast for Crows was that Lee did not use the many voices Dotrice had developed for the other four books in the series. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Dotrice holds a world record for the number of voices he created for this series of books. Dotrice used 224 different character voices in the first novel of the series, A Game of Thrones. These character voices continued on through the first three books and in the fifth book of the series, but Lee did not use any of these voices when he recorded A Feast for Crows. This made the fans rebel against the original recording of the audiobook.

Fans also made their wishes known to the publisher that they wanted the fourth book to be recorded by Dotrice so they could have a matching set of the series. On December 12, 2011, Bantam Books finally gave into the fans demands. The publisher informed the everyone that they planned to release A Feast for Crows audiobook to be recorded by Roy Dotrice.

According to many reports, A Feast for Crows audiobook is now available for download from Audible. However, Bantam Books announced that the CD will not be available in stores until March 2012. These audiobooks have sold more than 313,000 copies through CDs and downloads, but the sales dropped off for A Feast for Crows. This is the biggest reason Bantam Books decided to have Dotrice come back to record the fourth novel in the series.

No matter what Bantam Books states in their press releases about plans for A Feast for Crows audiobook to be recorded by Roy Dotrice, the fans will not be satisfied until they see the audiobook on the shelves.
