About The Narrator: Roy Dotrice

Roy Dotrice returns to deliver a spectacular performance as he reads A Dance with Dragons Audiobook. He narrated the first three novels, but had to take a break from the fourth due to time constraints. Fans who were disappointed with his replacement, John Lee, petitioned for Dotrice’s return. Random House Audio heeded the fans’ pleas and brought back Roy Dotrice. He delivered as promised and lived up to his reputation as George R. R. Martin’s first and only choice as a reader.

A Dance with Dragons Editors Review

Martin bounces back from the disappointment of the rather mediocre A Feast for Crows by returning to what the fans love best – the main characters of the first three novels and the “plots, ploys, whispers, lies, secrets within secrets” that make up the game of thrones. Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Queen Cersei, and Daenerys Targaryen take the center stage once more. The ribald adventures of Tyrion as a fugitive, accentuated with his usual flair and sarcastic wit, are enough to reignite the readers’ interest in the series. Fans will see him take on new roles as mummer, soldier, paymaster, slave, river rat and captive.

Fantastical elements prevail once more. Focus on the Targaryens and their dragons are to be expected, given the title of the book. Bran’s arrival at the crow sanctuary and Tyrion’s journey through a haunted river also offers some of the more beautiful and memorable scenes in the book.

Fans hoping for Martin to tie up loose ends are bound to be disappointed. As the fifth book, A Dance with Dragons is still essentially a middle book and does not offer much in the form of resolutions. What it does, however, is clarify the destinies and loyalties of some of the main characters. Supporting characters like Varys the Spider and Ser Jorah Mormont play more significant roles and dramatically contribute to the plot. By the end of the book, the chosen paths of both Jon Snow and Dany Targaryen become clear. The characters from the northern and southern parts of the world are slowly starting to converge, setting up the stage for the last books.

There is no denying that A Dance with Dragons is well worth the wait – a true breath of fresh air after A Feast for Crows. The only lingering doubt in the minds of the fans is whether George R. R. Martin will make them wait another five years for the next installment, or worse, whether he will be able to finish the series at all!

A Dance with Dragons Story (Spoiler!)

As the title implies, great focus is given to the House of Targaryen highlighting the continued struggle to power of Daenerys, and the introduction of Aegon Targaryen VI who was long thought to be dead. The plot develops as the once powerful families of the Seven Kingdoms- the Starks, Lannisters, and the Baratheons are all thrown out of their depth and are equally struggling to restore the power and authority that was once theirs.

At the Wall, the leadership skills of Jon Snow, the newly elected 998th Commander of the Night’s Watch, are put to the test as he faces opposition beyond the Wall and within the Watch. His “ally” and lord, Stannis Baratheon, continuously works towards his own goal of reclaiming the Iron Throne by seeking out the support of the northmen.

Tyrion Lannister has fled King’s Landing after murdering his father. He finds himself on a ship travelling to Pentos, though to what end or purpose, he is still unsure. Across the Narrow Sea where Tyrion sails, Daenerys Targaryen has successfully conquered the city of Meereen and has decided to rule it in order to prepare for eventual takeover of Westeros. Little does she know that her reputation has already reached the Seven Kingdoms and has caught the attention of the scheming nobles in the Iron Islands and Dorne.
