A Clash Of Kings Editors Review

As the second book in an ongoing epic fantasy series, A Clash of Kings offers little in the form of resolutions. Instead, it introduces new characters and conflicts to further the threads of the numerous plots that form the intricate tapestry of Westeros. Martin brings two additional viewpoints to the readers: Davos Seaworth and Theon Greyjoy. Davos is a former smuggler and one of Stannis’ most loyal sea captains. It is through his eyes and ears that the readers learn more about Stannis, his family, and the inner workings of his court. While the character of Theon himself leaves much to be desired, his chapters introduce the colorful world of the Greyjoy family and their rich background as fierce sea-raiders.

Fan favorites Arya, Jon, and Tyrion continue to steal the show as their characters develop through their individual adventures – or misadventures, as it were. Though Daenerys Targaryen has very little screen time in this novel, the implication that she and her dragons may yet turn the tables on the fates of the Seven Kingdoms and its key players remains strong. Tyrion shines as the main protagonist as he does his best to manipulate the evil members of his family by relying only his band of sellswords and his ever-reliable – and oft sarcastic – wit.

A Clash of Kings continues to offer the best of its predecessor: intricate plots, highly developed characters, and a well-paced story that keeps readers engaged. The gritty portrayal of human weakness that Martin’s series is famous for is further enhanced by the backdrop of a bloody civil war. The only downside to the novel is its slow advancement in terms of the actual story. In short, fans of A Game of Thrones will be sure to enjoy A Clash of Kings Audiobook, but will be left wanting for more.

A Clash Of Kings Story (Spoiler!)

The story picks up from where A Game of Thrones leaves off and chronicles the escalating civil war brewing in the capital of King’s Landing, as well as the northern campaign of the Night’s Watch as they try to subdue the mysterious wildling attacks. The main conflict in the book is called The War of the Five Kings as Robb Stark, Renly Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, Joffrey Baratheon, and Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands declare themselves Kings and fight among themselves to consolidate their power. In the scuffle, alliances are forged side by side with treachery as the major houses try to secure what they believe is truly theirs.

Robb Stark, the proclaimed King in the North, is holding out quite well in his battles with the Lannisters. As the young wolf king claims one victory after another, he becomes a legend in his own right and continuously wins over the hearts of the people. Whether he can hold on to his crown amidst the rising forces of both Baratheon brothers, however, remains to be seen. He sends his mother, Catelyn, to speak to the Baratheons on his behalf in the hopes of forging an alliance against the Lannisters. Unfortunately, both Stannis and Renly remain eager claimants to their late brother’s throne and will allow nothing – not even the bonds of blood – to stand in their way.

In the Iron Islands, Theon Greyjoy returns home expecting a grand welcome and the support of his father’s naval forces to further Robb’s cause. Instead, his father puts Theon’s loyalty to the test by putting him in a position to turn against the Starks and take over their family’s seat in Winterfell.

Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen continues her bid for the throne from a far away land armed with what is left of Khal Drogo’s khalasar and her dragons. Simultaneously, the Men of the Night’s Watch push on their campaign to stop the self-proclaimed King-beyond–the- Wall, Mance Rayder, as he pushes closer and closer to the Wall and ultimately the northern borders of the Kingdom.

Back in King’s Landing, there is no love lost for the Lannister family. Joffrey Baratheon sits on the Iron Throne amidst the growing unrest of a people suffering from hunger and the ever present threat of war. His precarious hold on the throne rests in the hands of his uncle, the Lannister dwarf, Tyrion. But with a deceitful eunuch and a shady sellsword as his sole advisors, can Tyrion himself survive the violent clash of kings?
